Seven Wonders of the World (Wide Web)

It seems that the Seven Wonders of the World aren’t good enough for some. After Philon of Byzantium selected the seven most desirable man-made monuments to vist way back in 200 BC, The Lighthouse at Alexandria, The Temple of Artemis, The Statue of Zeus, The Colossus of Rhodes, The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, The Hanging Gardens of Babylon and The Egyptian Pyramids have seen many visitors from all around the globe. Now a website is attempting to change these.

New 7 Wonders has been setup to reestablish said Wonders by taking into consideration more modern options such as the likes of The Eiffel Tower, The Statue of Liberty, The Sydney Opera House and The Great Wall of China. They are claiming this is the “first ever global vote to elect the New 7 Wonders of the World” and the results will be broadcast worldwide on January 1st 2007 (giving you plenty of time to get your vote in). I am finding it very difficult to decide on just one and I’m sure I won’t be the only one so take your time on your decision before submitting your vote.

This, to me, is one of those benefits of the Internet. How else would such a well-controlled and organised event take place without the likes of the Internet? It’s such a simple concept and I’m sure that most web developers could build this kind of application in less than a day. But the sheer power and potential of this website proves what can be done with today’s technologies. Let’s hope this is the first of many global votes to come in the future.
